When Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Viral Image Shows Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.
Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected cracking sounds ringing out across the neighbourhood.
“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her something was wrong.
As she stood on the road, talking to a pair who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. This turned out to be a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.
“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”
A Symbol of Bravery During Chaos
The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.
Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating many the injured.
Collective Outpouring and Solidarity
Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the location of the attack serving as a temporary treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as going into the water to rescue people needing help.
Following the events, comments of gratitude flooded in. One post conveyed thanks for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.
The group of beach patrol issued a communication, explaining they were “processing what happened”.
“Thank you all for your supportive messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion directed at our responders,” the organization wrote. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the hope that it aids those involved.”
Official Praise
Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew acted heroically from the moment the violence began right into late that evening.
“People have shared so many powerful accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.
“Our lifeguards demonstrate selflessness every day in keeping our world-famous coastlines protected for visitors, but what we observed on Sunday should be highly praised.
“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much good we have observed in the midst of such hatred.”
