‘We Will Miss Him Terribly’: The Actress Meg Ryan Publishes Emotional Homage to Rob Reiner
Meg Ryan has posted a tribute to the departed filmmaker Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the beloved rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Heartbreaking Event
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their residence in LA at the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, next to an image of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Court Case Developments
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan went on to write. “While uncertain, I suspect they'd wish for a hopeful, compassionate outcome that fosters mutual understanding and peace.”
A Statement from Siblings
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “The tragic, shattering loss of our parents is an experience no one should have to face. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”
Hollywood Tributes Pour In
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner through a message shared yesterday along with names including Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” it read. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”
An Enduring Filmography
When Harry Met Sally was a critical and commercial success in 1989, earning over $93 million globally and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were brought together by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.
Reiner’s notable filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
