Two Cuba-Headed Relief Sailboats Reported Lost subsequent to Setting Sail from Mexico.

A large-scale search and recovery operation is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailboats transporting aid cargo journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Military Rescue Missions Launched

The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were had on board no fewer than nine total personnel, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.

Background of Humanitarian Support to the Island

Cuba has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are fitted with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy said.

The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"The group is working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Relief Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and officially received another boat that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the country.

That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Larger Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.

The United Nations have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up over the past months, with statements from different officials emphasizing the delicate state of bilateral relations.

Responding to recent comments, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations were initiated, although their current progress remains unclear.

The maritime authorities said it was committed to using every available asset at its command to find the sailboats and guarantee the well-being of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
