The network's Leading New Show of 2025 Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
