Slot Provides No Excuses and Vows to Plot Way Out of Malaise
Arne Slot declared he needed to “look at myself” following Liverpool suffered a sixth loss in 7 Premier League matches at home to Nottingham Forest and insisted he would find a solution from the champions’ slump.
Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop prior to the match, produced the largest victory at Anfield in their club records as Liverpool slipped to an eighth loss in 11 fixtures in all competitions. The most expensive domestic acquisition, the Swedish striker, was once more unnoticeable and Liverpool argued the defender's opener should have been disallowed for similar reasons to the captain's disallowed effort against City prior to the international break. But Slot admitted the responsibility stopped with him and made no excuses.
“Nobody wishes to hear me now speaking about officiating calls if you lose 3-0 at home to Forest,” stated the Reds' boss. “I ought to examine my own role first and my squad, but it does show you how a goal can alter the flow of a match. Before I was just waiting for us to score a strike. Later we barely generated any chances.
“Of course there is a way out, particularly with the quality footballers we have. No matter if you triumph or are beaten when you reflect you are always thinking: ‘Where can we improve, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is different from doubting yourself.
“I wish to stress I am responsible for the current losses. You are responsible when you are victorious but also responsible when you are losing. I can not come up with sufficient excuses for us to have the results we have. That is far from good enough and I am to blame for that.”
The team's display fell apart as Slot introduced several attacking changes when pursuing the game. “It was the same on the road at Nottingham Forest last season,” he said. “I substituted the French defender out and put on the Portuguese forward and he scored immediately to make it 1-1. At that time it was brave, now it’s likely stupid.”
The Anfield side last lost back-to-back home league fixtures by Nottingham Forest in 1963. The last time they suffered consecutive league games by a three-goal scoreline was in 1965.
The manager commented: “It was very bad. Competing on home soil, conceding 3-0 no matter which opponent you encounter is a very, very bad result. Unexpected if you consider the opening 30 minutes of the match. I did not witness us creating so much in the opening 30 minutes perhaps the entire season, and the initial occasion they arrived in our penalty area they found the back of the net.
“It wasn’t at City, but in every other fixture we have been the dominant side and were capable to generate chances. Recently it is nearly constantly that we miss our chances and the ones we allow find the net.”
