A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before running away.

The purpose of the shooting is unknown and no arrests have taken place, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Police revealed that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a premises in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the building overseeing the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.

"The report indicates the victim was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the assault.

Important clues, like cartridges, were found at the scene.

Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have have information to assist with the investigation.

"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the shooting, and investigators have been following their trail to determine their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.
