Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The armed faction invaded the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
